Athletics

Athletics, or Track and Field, as it is known in the USA, is one of the most popular sporting programs within the USA university athletics system, providing numerous opportunities for athletes from all over the world to win scholarships to attend USA universities.

Some of the worlds best athletes have come through the USA university athletics system, which consistently develops World Champions and Olympic Gold Medalists.

If you are a student who wants to receive a quality education and looking to take your athletics career to the next level, studying in the USA on an athletics scholarship will give you the best of both worlds.

Athletic Scholarships

The rules that govern USA university athletic scholarships, how students are scouted, and the academic standards students need to compete and play sports at a USA university can be very long and confusing, especially if you are an international student. All these rules and regulations are dependent on the athletic association and division that your desired university competes in.

There are three major USA university sports associations that aspiring athletes can compete in, namely: The NCAA, the NAIA and the NJCAA. The NCAA is the largest, oldest, and most popular athletic association in the USA and is often portrayed in movies and on tv.

Universities who compete at the NCAA Division 1 level of athletics are at the highest level of sporting competition. According to NCAA rules, these colleges are allowed to distribute 12.6 athletics scholarships to their men’s teams and 18 athletic scholarships to their women’s teams.

NCAA Division 2 athletics programmes compete at an extremely high level too; these colleges have a proven track record of sending their athlete to the professional leagues. The only difference one may notice is that these universities tend to be slightly smaller private institutions, whereas the majority of division one colleges tend to be massive state-funded universities. Because Division 2 universities are smaller, they do not have the same funding capabilities as their division 1 counterparts and tend to balance their athletic and academic investments. Because of this, the NCAA restricts Division 2 universities to only being able to offer 12.6 full athletics scholarships to both their male and female teams.

On the other hand, should you be looking for a more academically focused university experience with the opportunity to keep playing the sport you love, attending a division 3 university may be the right place for you? Universities who compete at this level, do not offer any athletic scholarships to their students; however, they do provide both local and international students with academic scholarships. Division 3 institutions tend to be, but not always, smaller private institutions who are more focused on the academic experience of their students. Universities often have the capabilities and funding to compete at the NCAA Division 1 or 2 level; however, they have chosen not to do so. One college who is making the switch from division 3 directly to division 1 is the University of St. Thomas, and they will complete the transition in 2021.

Universities who compete in the NAIA athletic association can offer their student-athletes 12 full scholarships to both women and men athletes, while the colleges who complete in the NJCAA can offer up to 20 scholarships to both male and female teams.

Think you’ve got what it takes?

How can I get an athletic scholarship?

Student-athletes looking to compete in the USA and win a sports scholarship need to ensure that the universities they wish to attend offer athletics as one of their sporting programs. You should start the scholarship acquisition process by formally reaching out to the coach and introducing yourself. When doing this, ensure that you provide him/her with a comprehensive resume which includes all of your accolades, achievements and personal information. Based on this, coaches may offer you a spot on the roster and if they really want you on their team they will offer you an athletics scholarship.
